Ethereum Community Considers Hard Fork To Fight ASIC Miners

03.04.2018

Recently, several new ideas for the development of the project appeared on the Github of the Etherium. On April 1, Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Etherium, suggested that a hardfork should be implemented to set the upper limits of the number of ETHs by about 120 million (in the second variant, 144 million). At first the proposal was taken for an April Fool's joke, but Vitalik explained that he was really interested in the community's opinion on this issue and is ready to put the words to action.

A few days earlier, the developer, Piper Merriam, said that the Etherium should have a hardfork to demonstrate the community's desire to withstand the use of ASIC in the Etherium mining industry.

The proposal on the emission limit of ETH :

Vitalik Buterin published a proposal to improve Etherium proposing to enter the upper limit of the total stock of ETH tokens in the amount of 120,204,432 - "an amount that is exactly twice the amount sold during the first crowdsale."

According to him, the upper limit of emissions should "ensure the economic reliability of the platform in a variety of circumstances."

On the implementation of the proposal, Vitalik says:

"During the next hard-core, which will change the allocation of awards (most likely, this will be the first phase of the Casper project), the proposal will require the denomination of all awards within the protocol."

As Buterin explains,

"if for some reason it is realized at a time when it will be too late to set a maximum limit of 120 million, it is possible to set a higher maximum threshold. I would recommend 144 052 828 ETH, or an amount that is exactly twice the total number of coins issued in the genesis block, including both sale and pre-sale. "

At the moment, Vitalik Buterin and the Foundation of the Etherium did not express an official position on this hordfork. The likelihood of the implementation of hardforks looks low, as large holders of the air and business do not need unnecessary problems, and the influence of miners in the ecosystem of the Etherium is traditionally lower than in Bitcoin. Given the approaching transition to PoS, which will put an end to any hardware mining, developers are unlikely to take the risk of changing the algorithm and the associated upheavals.
