Sergey Brin of Google: mining became the driver of the computing boom

03.05.2018

One of the founders of Google Sergey Brin, in his address to investors, wrote that the growth of demand for computing power in the mining industry caused a global "computing boom".

The extraction of cryptocurrency, according to Breen, has become one of the main drivers, which forced Google to accelerate its own processes more than 200 thousand times in the last 20 years. In many respects such a rapid growth of computing power became possible thanks to the gaming industry, which every year offered new products that required more and more processing power. In part, this was due to improved graphics, which in turn gave a huge push in the development of graphics adapters. It is they who recently play a major role in the mining industry, since most cryptocurrency algorithms use GPU chips for "proof of work".

Bryn named two more important factors, which, in his opinion, lead to an increase in computing power:

1. Moore's stable law, according to which the number of transistors placed on a chip is doubled every 2 years;

2. For the last 10 years, the level of machine training has improved qualitatively. Some even give this event a revolutionary significance.

However, despite the position of one of the co-founders of Google, the corporation is still negatively inclined towards cryptocurrencies. This is indicated by recent bans on advertising crypto and ICO in all of its services, a ban on adding extensions to the Chrome Web Store for cryptocurrency, and those that are now, the company promises to remove by July.

But on the other hand, it should be noted that Google is one of the active investors in the blockchain and last year even took second place in the corresponding rating. In addition, Google is working on its own blockchain solution for cloud services.
