Toyota and Nissan recall about 6.6 million vehicles due to defective airbags

Toyota is recalling about 5 million cars of 35 models produced in the period from March 2003 to November 2007, including 1.36 million vehicles in Japan and 637 thousand in the United States.

Nissan is recalling 1.56 million cars produced in 2004-2007, including 288 thousand cars in Japan, 326 thousand in North America, as well as 563 thousand in Europe.

Earlier, more than 10 different car manufacturers have announced the withdrawal of a total of 25 million vehicles due to defective airbags Takata, issued by the end of 2008. The problem of the safety airbag is believed to be the cause of at least 10 deaths.

"It has been found that in certain types of injection pumps of the airbags may eventually get penetrated by water", - the Toyota report says. "As a result, the opening of these airbags, in the event of an accident, can happen wrongly."

Toyota intends to replace the pumps of the airbags located on the driver side with the device of the company Daicel, and by the passenger seat to update and renew the current device of Takata.

Nissan announced the discovery of a similar defect.
